Crimson Harbor
Short Film
Completed in 2024, Crimson Harbor is an eight-minute horror short by Victor Bonafonte, co-produced with Beauty and The Bit, Raised By Monsters, and Wildcat Records. What began as a small experiment grew into a full story, selected by more than 50 international festivals. Developed in Unreal Engine, the project embraced real-time filmmaking to turn digital sculptures and early concepts into a dreamlike narrative of mystery and horror.
Production unfolded in just four months with a 25-person team. Motion capture, facial capture, and voice work were completed in a handful of days, with actors Whitney Okeichi, Kerby Grubb, and Ana Iglesias breathing life into the cast. The use of Unreal Engine blurred the line between previs and production, allowing Bonafonte to iterate quickly, test shots, and even cut entire sequences late in the process without losing momentum. This freedom to experiment gave the film its distinctive atmosphere.
Visually, Crimson Harbor rejects the glossy spectacle of video game cinematics in favor of a more suggestive, cinematic style. Bonafonte drew on influences from Lynch, Fincher, the Coen brothers, and Panos Cosmatos, embracing imperfections in lenses, old-school aspect ratios, and a design language rooted in atmosphere and psychological unease. Color played a crucial role: cold greens, suffocating yellows, and harsh reds shaped the mood, while the environments themselves became characters within the story.
Creatures, central to the narrative, were designed around body horror and imperfection, inspired by works like Jacob’s Ladder, Cronenberg, and Junji Ito. They embodied deformity and unease rather than blockbuster spectacle, tying into the myth of the “blind, deaf, and mute witnesses.” Alongside them, the human characters were conceived with 1970s aesthetics and psychological depth, balancing realism and archetype.
Quickly after completion, Crimson Harbor began circulating through festival circuits, proving that bold, atmospheric storytelling can emerge from lean, inventive processes. It stands not only as a milestone in Bonafonte’s career but also as a compelling example of how new filmmaking methods can expand the possibilities of independent cinema. It already has achieved more than 50 official international film festivals selections and counting…
